I love this product so much that we have three of them. It's powerful, safe, quiet and solid, all the qualities I looked for.

We have a 2100 sq ft. home on three floors with no central heating only a gas fireplace in San Francisco. These space heaters are perfect for us and very cost effective. I purposely won't install central heating since it's really not necessary here. Our electric and gas bills have averaged $120/mo. so far this year. Also this gives us focused heat only where we need it.

This heater was bought as a gift for my parents in FL. It is quiet and does help to heat their apt. Mother has raved about it ever since she received it. It was especially timely, given Florida's cooler than normal weather this winter season.
It arrived quickly as ordered, and is lightweight and easy for my 79 yr old mother to move from area to area to help keep my 82 yr old semi-invalid father warm. A reliable product that does what it is advertised to do. -- holmes heater

I purchased one of these heaters from a local drug store about 3 years ago at a closeout price of $20. That heater is used for heating under a cubical desk in my office and is still working great. It's extremely quiet and a fantastic little heater. The worst part about it is the control. You have cycle through all the settings to get to the temperature you want and then turn it off. You have to push the button 10x each time you use the thing.

My boss wanted one for her desk because this unit is so quiet. (We had already tried several other types of heaters that were too hot, too loud, too big, too small, etc.) After searching high and low, I finally found one on Amazon. It worked great for the first 2 weeks and then we started having issues with the thermostat. It would constantly turn off no matter what temperature it was set at. We would set the thing for 80 degrees and it would shut off after 10 minutes and stay off of at least as long. There is no way it got to 80 degrees in the location we use this heater. For this reason we ended up sending the unit back to Amazon. I've got to say, the process was painless. Two thumbs up for Amazon's return policies.

We ended up getting a Vornado Vortex Heater. It's very similar to this unit and we had a 20% off coupon at a local retailer. (Sorry Amazon, we needed it quickly.) Even with that, it was $25 more than the Holmes. The Vornado is slightly louder but it has better controls. Best part.. my boss is finally happy and her legs and feet are warm.

Bottom line for the Holmes unit... If you get a good one, it really is a fantastic heater. Unfortunately, it seems many of them are having thermostat issues. I don't know if Holmes had a bad batch or what. I took a chance based on my previous experience despite the negative reviews I was reading. It didn't pay off this time... -- My 3 yr old one works great. The new one I got... not so great.

The Holmes HFH2986-U is whisper quiet, as advertised. I've tried several other heathers but the fans have all been too noisy for use in a sleeping area. I liked the earlier model a little more because it had a temperature dial to provide a more flexible temperature adjustment but it's no longer available. This new model certainly deserves four stars. -- Great for heating a bedroom

when i had to replace a cheaper older holmes space heater i had a choice of one for
15 dollars us vs this one for 30 plus dollars or about 40 with shipping because i
needed to warm up the room asap. heck what's 20 bucks anymore? im glad i got this
one becaise it is so quiet that it doubles as a low level white noise generator that
muffles the hum of urban street traffic in a main road a block away but not of course
loud power tools like leaf blowers. late at night its the nbext best thing to whisper
quiet tech we'll have someday. the trade off is its a little less effective than the
same standard 1600 watts with a stronger louder fan. this is a nice quiet way to take
the chill off winter nights in the sunbelt. if it were up north id get the least noisy
high speed fan and maybe two heaters to keep warm in freezing winters. if it were a permanent home it would be a no noise solar powered tech but great for temporary housing.

its not a big deal about pressing the button 8 times to go from on to off to on again.
its just dumb that none of these fake settings sets a thermostat or maybe i missed it
by not reading the directions? so it stays on all night but it hasnt broken so its
either too early or the low speed fan is under low stress and might last a year.

for my need for quiet warmth in a mild winter climate 5 stars. in general 3-4 stars. -- it is very quiet
